Agriculture and Natural Resources

A two-day workshop that focused on designing Organic No-Till Vegetable Production Systems took place on October 28 and 29. Seventy participants, including farmers and agricultural professionals, attended on the first day of the workshop to learn from national experts on how these systems may work in western Washington. The afternoon session took producers to an on-farm research trial that demonstrated the benefits and challenges. The second day of the workshop focused on developing a research proposal to take a closer look at these systems in Washington and apply for funds from the USDA Organic Agriculture Research and Extension Initiative Program. A WSDA planning grant was received to sponsor the workshop.

4-H

The YMCA of Tacoma Pierce County asked 4-H to collaborate on a grant proposal to provide training to YMCA staff in the Franklin Pierce School District. Training will consist of positive youth development techniques, intentionally programming with life skills, and making healthy food choices through hands-on cooking.

FARM Program

Now that the fee structure for the new farmers market permit has been approved by the Board of Health, Carrie Sikorski is sending the TPCHD Food Safety Program a proposed communication packet for vendor applications and education, which is based on a six county review of similar outreach/education materials completed by the Pierce County Farmers Market Forum.

Carrie Sikorski participated in the "Focus on Farming Land and Water Policy Summit" in Marysville. Carrie and Chris Benedict attended the Focus on Farming Conference. The Puget Sound Food Network website was showcased, which provides a brand new matching service, complete with invoicing and transportation and connections for buyers and farmers. The FARM program will host a demonstration for Pierce County farmers and Go Local Tacoma before the end of 2009. More at Snohomish County Focus on Farming or Puget Sound Food Network.

Carrie Sikorski will be joining Kitsap County Extension and WSDA Direct Marketing to host the "Women Farmers Roundtable" on Nov 10. Twenty-five women farmers have signed up and more are on a waiting list.
