Food Safety Advisor Program

The Food Safety Advisor volunteer program at WSU Pierce County Extension is designed to provide in-depth food safety, food preservation and nutrition training. Participants receive 45 hours of subject matter and teaching methodology training. In return, volunteers commit to a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service.

Trained volunteers help consumers with information on:

  • Safe food handling practices
  • Basic understanding and prevention of food borne diseases
  • Researched, safe home food preservation techniques
  • Dietary guidelines
  • Nutrition and health issues
  • Quick and easy meal preparation classes

Audiences include:

  • Consumers
  • Community groups
  • Young parents
  • Teenagers
  • Seniors
  • Military personnel
  • Children

Outreach methods used:

  • Hotline
  • Booth at fairs, farmer's markets, and other community events
  • Classes for community groups
  • News releases
