Brightly colored posters, picture cards and sing-along songs encourage children to develop healthy lifestyles that will follow them to adulthood.
The award-winning curriculum was developed through a partnership of North Carolina Cooperative Extension and the Physical Activity and Nutrition Unit, N.C. Division of Public Health. The program targets 4 and 5-year-olds, in hopes of improving their diets and activity levels.
The idea behind the program was to introduce children at an early age to new types of nutritious foods and to help them explore opportunities for physical activity. Color Me Healthy uses colors, music and draws on young children’s imaginations to learn about health and nutrition.
The program includes parent newsletters with tips on eating well and simple ways to be more physically active with kids. There are also recipes for quick healthy meals and easy suggestions for cooking together with kids.
In the classroom the students will be presented with lots of colorful activities accompanied by fun posters and cards for students to view during circle time. Each lesson has simple extended activity ideas and lesson plans for teachers to use after the WSU Educator has left the classroom.
