Nutrition

The WSU-Pierce County Extension offers the public a variety of nutrition/food related programs.

Food $ense
The following programs are Food $ense programs.

The Square Foot Nutrition Project is garden-enhanced nutrition education for elementary students in schools where 50 percent or more of the children receive free or reduced-price meals. Students grow Pacific Northwest crops such as peas, potatoes, salad greens and radishes. Lessons to promote health and wellness are taught in the classrooms and schoolyard gardens using interactive learning activities.

EFNEP, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program, is a federal and state funded project designed to teach nutrition and shopping basics to parenting adults. There is no cost to eligible participants.

HealthWi$e, the Food $ense Nutrition Adult Program is a federally funded project working in collaboration with local community organizations. HealthWi$e is designed to teach food bank and food stamp eligible adults and seniors cooking, nutrition, and shopping skills. Our goal is to reach adults that are not eligible for other free nutrition programs.

The Food Safety Advisor Program teaches a 45-hour course in safe food handling, basic understanding of food borne illnesses, dietary guidelines, and nutrition and health issues. Volunteers then assist the extension office in public outreach programs, including a food safety hotline, booths at fairs, farmer’s markets and other community events.
