Membership to The Master Gardener Foundation of Pierce County
The Master Gardener Foundation of Pierce County (MGFPC) is a recognized non-profit partner of Washington State University (WSU) in the delivery of research based horticultural information. The Foundation is responsible for supporting this delivery process thru volunteer support and funding of programs, events and projects. Foundation support is directly apparent through the support of Master Gardener training of both new and current Master Gardeners, plant clinics, appearances at special events, presentations, and printed materials.
Due to a 2004 Washington State Attorney General opinion, Master Gardeners are no longer automatically members of their local or state foundations, but instead must sign-up each and every year. Thus, it is in the best interest of the group that Master Gardeners join the foundation to help provide direction and funding through the Foundation Board’s decisions on program direction and funding. Foundation membership directly allows the member to choose directors that carry out the Foundation’s duties and responsibilities. Although membership in the Foundation is separate from obligations to the Master Gardener program and not required for participation as a Master Gardener volunteer, the number and proportion of Foundation members in a local Master Gardener program can be used by supporters (and detractors) as indications of how strong and important the local organization is.
