Food $ense is a school-based nutrition education program designed to provide limited income families with the knowledge and skills to include healthy foods and activities into everyday life. The projects are funded through the USDA Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, WSU Pierce County Extension, and local community partners. The goal is to make an impact on families’ buying and eating habits by teaching children to identify healthy patterns of eating and activity, simple food preparation skills, and more, all through interactive learning games and activities. The idea for the project is based on evidence that children influence the shopping decisions of adults and that most healthy eating habits are generated in the formative years, leading to lifelong patterns of health.
