Media-Smart Youth: |
Developed by the NICHD (National Institute of Child Health and Human Development), the Media-Smart Youth curriculum was designed to:
- Help 11 to 13 year old youth become aware of and think critically about media's role in influencing their nutrition and physical activity choices
- Assist young people in building skills that help them make informed decisions about being physically active and eating nutritiously in daily life
- Encourage young people to establish healthy habits that will last into adulthood
Media-Smart Youth is offered as an interactive and engaging two-week workshop, presented to students as school enrichment in the fall or spring of the school year. Teachers hosting the workshops in their classrooms will work with a WSU nutrition educator to teach the curriculum to their students. Teachers will receive the curriculum, a lesson outline, and an orientation. We ask in return that teachers simply document the time they spend using the Media-Smart Youth curriculum with their students. Based on the Media-Smart Youth workshop, students will have an opportunity to create and present a Big Production through posters, mini-skits, public service announcements, etc. to encourage their community to Eat, Think, and Be Active!
